Removing Pet Odors

cleaning

Q. How does one remove pet odors (urine odor) from a brick floor in one's home?

A: Removing pet odors from brick and tile floors is different than treating carpet, so I recommend contacting a professional carpet cleaner who has the capabilities, training and experience to clean hard surfaces. Reputable carpet cleaning services such as those with International Institute of Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) attend continuing education seminars to stay abreast of the industry's latest products and techniques.

  1. I would start with my steam cleaner with the special rubber attachment for flooring to flush the floors clean several times with the proper cleaning solution. It's important that the cleaning product is compatible with the pH of a hard surface to maintain its appearance and lifespan. If we were to clean it with bleach or other aggressive cleaners, we could ruin the flooring. Vacuum with a wet/dry vac and repeat the process once or twice more.
  2. The next step is to apply a deodorizer.
  3. I would flush/rinse it well with clean water, and vacuum again.
  4. Allow it to dry thoroughly. Mortar and masonry are porous, so give it plenty of time. You could also use fans or blowers to speed up the drying.
  5. Finally seal it with a good sealer.
