Choosing Stone Countertops

cabinets and countertops

Countertops are made from materials that are durable and, in most cases, easy to maintain. Most combine a base of plywood or particleboard that spans across the top of a cabinet and the finish surface material.

If you're looking to buy new countertops, the material you choose will depend on your budget and the appearance and serviceable qualities you want.

Stone Types

Natural stone, such as granite, is considered to be the height of elegance and will last longer than most kitchens. Stone, however, is very expensive and requires some care. Choices such as granite, marble and soapstone can also be installed on counterops in 12" square tiles and grouted. This can give you the beauty of natural stone for less expense than installing a solid piece. Another advantage is that individual tiles can be easily changed if damaged, so be sure to keep a few extra pieces from the original lot in case you need to replace any in the future.
