Architects and Designers

If your project is fairly complex you should consider hiring an architect and/or designer. These professionals have the skills to help you create the look you want. They also have the knowledge to help steer your project in the appropriate direction, which can help minimize problems during the project.

Architects are professionals who design homes or additions from the foundation up. If you're planning structural changes, such as removing walls, or if you are planning a complex design, you should hire an architect. An architect will help you detail exactly what you want, draw up plans and material specifications and may provide oversight for your project while it is in progress.

Hiring an architect can help eliminate confusion and could save you a lot of time and money. Architects typically charge an hourly or flat fee, so be sure to get an estimate of the total cost to draw up plans. Once the structural plan is in place, you will need to determine the "look" you want. Interior designers are specialists who offer advice on furniture, wall coverings, colors, styles the overall physical appearance of your project.

Designers also may help you save time and money by helping you narrow down your choices and by receiving professional discounts. When you meet an interior designer, expect to talk about your personal style and preferences. From that, the designer will develop some ideas that would work for you. Interior designers may charge by the hour or you may negotiate a flat fee equal to a percentage of the total project cost.
